Czech and Slovak Club of  Greater Kansas City

 
Important Club Event - Sunday, October 21


The Czech and Slovak Club of Kansas City, in partnership with Greater Kansas City People to People, will be presenting the award winning Czech film "Kolja" during the upcoming “Filmfest Kansas City” program at the Screenland Theater. The Screenland is located just to the west of downtown Kansas City at 1656 Washington Street, KC, MO 64108(816-421-2900). This is a weeklong event that will feature films of all types, both foreign and domestic, and is open to the public. Our film will begin at 5:30 PM on Sunday, October 21. The cost to attend our film is $6 per person. In addition to the film, we will also host a potluck dinner in the Screenland Theater banquet room beginning at 4:15. There is no cost of admission to the banquet, we just ask that everyone bring a covered dish to share based on your last name as listed below. The club will be providing all set-ups and the Screenland has a cash bar.

A through J – appetizer or dessert

K through R – meat or main course

S through Z – salad or other side dish



As a special bonus, we will also be showing a short documentary about the history of Czechoslovakia that was produced by Sam Huneke, a student and son of member Edith Clowes. Sam won a national award for his work on the documentary. All members and non-members are welcome to attend our film and banquet. KOLJA

(1996)…105 minutes…Czech Republic…Slovak/Czech/Russian… Directed by Jan Sverak. 1997 Academy Awards Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film. Franta Louka is a concert cellist in Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia, a confirmed bachelor and a lady's man. Having lost his place in the state orchestra, he must make ends meet by playing at funerals and painting tombstones. But he has run up a large debt, and when his friend, the grave-digger Mr. Broz, suggests a scheme for making a lot of money by marrying a Russian woman so that she can get her Czech papers, he reluctantly agrees. She takes advantage of the situation to emigrate to West Germany, to her lover; and leaves her five-year-old son with his grandmother; when the grandmother dies, Kolja must come and live with his stepfather - Louka.
