OLOMOUC
The city of Olomouc bears clear traces of all the periods it had undergone since its origin right till the present day. We may find the city´s very beginnings in the era of Great Moravia when a magnate´s farmstead originated in the south-east part of a rocky headland in the 9th century. After Moravia had been annexed to the Bohemian state of Přemysl in the early 11th century, Olomouc became an important centre of political and ecclesiastic administration, represented by the princely castle of the Moravian branch of the Přemysl dynasty and by the bishop´s residence, founded in 1063 (in 1777 it became an archbishopric). A few marchants´ extramural settlemens laid the foundation of a flourishing medieval city. From the second half of the 18th century the city was gradually being converted into a frontier stronghold and so the development of building was retarded here, when compared to our other towns. However, at the same time, this fact helped to preserve the urban body of the historical heart of the town without being affected by various insensitive and disturbing interferences which often accompanied the economic development in the 19th century. This was not the case with individual buildings-both secular and ecclesiastic. If we omit their natural development according to individual styles, determined by the changing demans and changing style of life of the users, we may see that a number of buildings was completely rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century and during the 19th century and some of them had vanished altogether. This was the case with many ecclesiastic establishments which were abolished under the reign of Joseph II.
The complex of the former monastery of Hradisko, founded in 1078 by the Přemysl dynasty, is also one of the most characteristic parts of Olomouc. Its present appearence dates from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Due to its span and size it gives an impression of a stronghold more than a Premonstratensian monastery as may be seen on the engraving from the beginning of the 18th century.
The St.Wenceslav Church in Olomouc, situated on the site of the former castle of the Přemysl dynasty, was the place where King Wenceslav III., the last member of the Přemysl dynasty, was assasinated. It has undergone several reconstructions in the past. The former Romanesque basilica was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 13th century and it was altered later during the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
The city of Olomouc is located in the eastern part of the Czech republic.
Its area is about 11 661 hectares.
As of the 1st January 1998, 225 869 inhabitans lived in Olomouc district.
The everage age of Olomouc inhabitans is 37,9 years of age.
